- Noms of Hong Kong: Anything But Salads -

Finally went to Anything But Salads (A.B.S.) and tried their ‘Raw, Vegan, Paleo and Gluten Free Mooncakes’! It’s almost Mid Autumn and I was looking for a healthier version of mooncakes that was also vegan. I previously had their ‘Superfood Paleo Ice Cream’ at an outdoor yoga event organized by Yoga Alfresco. Their ice cream was not only healthy and contained a ton of superfoods, but was also delicious! I went on their website and found that they specialized in making guilt free, healthy snacks. Which, is basically heaven for someone like me who snacks 24-7. However, their raw vegan mooncakes really attracted my attention. The two flavours are available coconut and lemon (white) and chocolate almond butter (black).

White: coconut and lemon moncake. Black: chocolate almond butter.

The white mooncake was made from, ‘A sprouted cashew nut and coconut skin with a lusciously zesty raw vegan lemon crème filling’. Traditional Chinese mooncakes are usually really dense and sweet, and you typically need a cup of black tea to wash down how greasy and oily it is. However, the mooncake from ABS was really light with a slightly sour taste from the lemon. It was really moist as well and because it was so light, it kept you wanting more.

The black mooncake was made from, ‘ A dark chocolate sprouted cashew nut and flaxmeal skin with a rich and divine sprouted cinnamon almond butter mousse filling’. This one is for all the chocolate fans out there! The chocolate wasn’t overbearingly sweet like all the commercial chocolate with a lot of added sugar and the flaxmeal gave the mooncake a slightly crumbly texture. However, the almond butter mousse kept the mooncake moist and gave it a slightly creamy texture.

The chocolate almond butter is slightly heavier than the coconut and lemon mooncake which made them a perfect combination for each other. I personally preferred the chocolate almond butter (I’m a bit addicted to almond butter :P) but they are both delicious and unique.

If you want a healthier alternative to the traditional mooncake on Mid Autumn, you have to try this raw vegan mooncake!
